Two Distinct Safety Roles

Slinging and banksman duties are critical to safe lifting operations. Each role carries specific responsibilities under LOLER 1998.

Slinger (Signaller)

  • Responsible for attaching loads to cranes and lifting equipment
  • Selects correct lifting accessories (chains, slings, shackles)
  • Assesses load weight, centre of gravity, and attachment points
  • Ensures safe lift before signalling crane operator

Banksman

  • Guides crane operators and vehicle movements using hand signals
  • Maintains visual contact between operator and load/surroundings
  • Manages exclusion zones during lifting operations
  • Critical role when operator has restricted visibility
